You can assemble a costume from pieces you have on hand or buy one ready-to-wear. Get your sweetie to dress as a western saloon girl and you have a theme going here. Now all you need is a gambler, a gunslinger, and the sheriff.
Actually, you could use the theme for a party. Add a poker game and get the saloon girls to sing some songs and kick up their legs. Put an old western movie to playing on the TV. No bar fights though.
What You Need for an Old-Time Western Barkeep Costume
White long-sleeved shirt
Bowtie or regular tie
Vest or suspenders
White, long apron like a butcher’s apron – these are called half aprons and come in different lengths
Mustache – If you already have facial hair, good for you. If not, apply a simple stick-on mustache and you are ready to tend the bar.
Arm bands – red or black are traditional
Get this picture in your mind: The cowboy ties his horse to the hitching rack and pushes through the swinging doors of the saloon. “Give me a cold one, ” he calls to the bartender.
The barman fills the glass to the brim with a frothy beer and slides it down the polished bar.
For the basics (long-sleeved white shirt and black slacks), you probably just need to rummage in your closet. If you don’t have those in your wardrobe, you can buy them inexpensively at Walmart or head to a thrift shop for really low-cost shirt and slacks.
A vest in black or red is probably not part of your usual attire, so I’m providing a few samples here. You’ll also want a long, white bartender’s apron.
If you want a ready-to-go wild west bartender’s costume, you can order a complete one from Amazon. Here’s the deluxe version for those who don’t have the time to track down the various pieces. This adds some humor with the gun belt with the holsters filled with bottles of beer.
