Getting ready to travel to Senegal? Mosquitoes in West Africa are known to carry several dangerous diseases, including malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and zika virus. Malaria, alone, kills more than a million people a year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Make sure you and your family or travel companions stay safe and healthy from these flying pests while you are in Senegal! Stock up on a good quality mosquito repellent and permethrin, as well as a bed net. It’s very important to protect your health while traveling in Senegal or anywhere in Africa.

Mosquito Protection in Senegal

You should not have much problem with daytime mosquitoes in Dakar, especially if you stay in the downtown area, or the neighborhoods near the airport. Although, there are some poorer areas, without adequate sanitation, where they could be a problem.

You especially want to avoid the mosquitoes at night, as these are the ones that can carry malaria, a disease you definitely do not want to catch! If you stay in a hotel or apartment with good, reliable air conditioning, you may be able to avoid the bites. But, if you want to enjoy the nightlife in Dakar, which is part of the fun of traveling, you should bring a good mosquito repellent.

This is the mosquito repellent that was recommended by my travel doctor when I went to get my Yellow Fever vaccination. She said it is the same formula that U.S. troops use when they are stationed in malaria-prone parts of the world. Since that is where I was headed, I stocked up.

I bought extra tubes for my trip to Guinea last year, and was very glad; because the mosquitoes in Conakry were fierce, and our trip ended up lasting longer than anticipated. It’s a good idea to be prepared for such an emergency, because you never know what might happen. You don’t want to be caught unprotected!

Mosquito Nets

If you aren’t sure where you will be sleeping, or don’t know whether or not your hotel provides mosquito nets, it is a good idea to bring a few of your own. Each member of your travel party should have a well-constructed mosquito net to protect them at night when the malaria-bearing mosquitoes are looking for food (your blood).

I like the style in the photo above. You can click the photo to see other options at Amazon, but if you read the reviews I think you will see that other travelers agree with me. If you are like me, you don’t want to take chances with your health or that of your family. That is why I always prefer the highest quality protection from mosquitoes and other insects when I am visiting West Africa.

You will want to have with you plenty of permethrin. Spray this on your bed nets and your clothing to repel mosquitoes. Do not spray permethrin on your skin, because it is toxic to humans!

To use this mosquito repellent on your clothing, saturate clean garments well and allow to air dry. The protection provided by permethrin will last through several washes. This formula will not stain your fabrics.

By the way, you should plan to wear long sleeves and long pants or maxi skirts, along with socks and close-toed shoes. The clothing will protect you from the mosquitoes, as well as the sun. The shoes will also be easier to walk in than sandals, because there is a lot of sand in Senegal. Even the streets of Dakar are made of sand!

To protect yourself at bedtime, saturate your bed nets with permethrin spray, or soak it in liquid. Hang to dry. The permethrin treatment should last about six weeks before needing to be redone.

Enjoy your trip to Senegal! It is a beautiful country with lovely, friendly people. At the same time, stay safe and healthy by protecting yourself from the diseases pesky mosquitoes carry. Make sure all you bring home are wonderful memories and souvenirs. Don’t take the risk of bringing a terrible disease home with you! Protect yourself with the proper insect repellents and bed nets!
