What is the best mosquito protection for babies? Mosquitoes carry a lot of dangerous diseases, and many insect repellents are not safe for babies and young children. You are wise to look for non-toxic ways to protect your little ones from insects that could make them sick.

The Zika virus is a growing concern this summer in the United States. This illness has been linked to birth defects in newborn babies. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, we still do not know the effects of the virus on the potential brain development of babies and young children. It is a good idea to play it safe and protect your infant from these potentially dangerous vectors.

The mosquito carrying the Zika virus is an aggressive daytime biter. It will also bite your child indoors as well as outdoors, which is important to keep in mind if flying insects are able to enter your home. Not only do these pests bite during the daytime, but they will also feed at night.

Let’s face it! There’s no place or time we can be truly safe from these dangerous mosquitoes! We have to take action to protect our families!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns against using many mosquito repellents, like DEET and Picaridin, on newborns under two months of age. Even if your baby is a bit older, you may not want to cover their tender skin with strong chemicals and poisons.

Fortunately, there are some safe ways to provide mosquito protection for babies and young children. Let’s look at a few of them!

Baby Mosquito Net for Strollers, Carriers, Car Seats, Cradles. Fits Most Pack’n’Plays, Cribs, Bassinets & Playpens. Made of White, Portable & Durable Insect Netting, Provides Complete Child Protection Pack N Play – Playpen Netting Fits Most Graco – Jeep – Kolcraft and More!

The best mosquito protection for babies is to prevent the bugs from getting to them in the first place. You can keep your children inside the house, but summer is full of too many fun things! That’s not a good option for most people.

When my daughter was little, I didn’t know you could buy this kind of mosquito protection for babies. Our family liked to camp, and I would have to put her inside the tent when the bugs started coming out in the evenings. This made her feel isolated, even though it was for her own protection. It was not a good solution.

Then we took a trip to Peru, when she was almost two years old. My baby got several white splotches on her face that were due to insects biting her at night while she was sleeping. This discoloration stayed with her for about six months after we got home, so it was kind of a huge deal! Pretty scary for me, because I didn’t know when, or if, her skin would go back to its normal color.

A woman at our hotel was horrified that I had let insects bite my baby. She brought me a pink net to put over my daughter’s crib. She didn’t have any more insect bites after that. It was a huge relief! I wished I had known earlier that I needed to do this.

I learned my lesson the hard way! But, you don’t have to.

With a mosquito net, you can feel comfortable taking your little one into the great outdoors to enjoy all of the fun that summer has to offer, without the danger of facing painful and possibly dangerous insect bites. Nets are available that fit over car seats, to protect your infant as you take her to and from the car. Netting that fits over the playpen provides mosquito protection in the backyard or on a camping trip. You can also find mosquito nets that cover your child’s stroller.

The Jolly Jumper Insect Net is a very versatile net, which fits over most carseats, as well as other baby carriers and swings. The Amazon reviews are good, and most parents seem to like it a lot.

I wondered if it would fit over many different types of carseats, so I made a list of the models mentioned in the reviews. According to reviewers who have used it, they said it fits well on:

  • Baby Trend
  • Britax BAgile
  • Britax BSafe
  • Chico KeyFit 30
  • Graco Click Connect 35
  • Graco Quick Click Carrier
  • Graco SnugFit
  • Graco Snugride 35
  • Maxi Cosi

Parents also mentioned that it fits nicely on a Moses basket carrier and baby swings. One specifically mentioned that it works on the Fisher Price Calming Vibrations Bouncer. So, if you like to use any of these items out in the yard, this could provide the mosquito protection your baby needs.

May you and your baby have a fun, safe and healthy summer!
